US priest kidnapped during South African church service

Amid a Sunday sermon, US Pastor Josh Sullivan was forcibly abducted by four masked gunmen from his pulpit in South Africa, inciting terror among his family and congregation.

Josh Sullivan, a 45-year-old American missionary, was kidnapped at gunpoint during his church service, an alarming event that unfolded in front of his wife, children, and 50 churchgoers, the US Sun reported.

On a quiet Thursday at 19:00, while Sullivan passionately delivered his sermon, tragedy struck. The church, nestled in the largest township of Nelson Mandela Bay, became the scene of a chilling crime as four armed assailants stormed in.

Masked Gunmen Disrupt Sermon, Abduct Beloved Pastor

As Sullivan addressed his congregation, one gunman approached him while the other three spread out and menacingly robbed the congregants. Witnesses recall the sheer panic as the gunmen ordered worshippers to hand over their belongings, including two cell phones, which they swiftly seized.

The culprits then forced Sullivan out of the church and used his own silver Toyota Fortuner as their escape vehicle. Authorities later discovered the abandoned SUV, highlighting the hastily planned nature of the getaway.

Family and Congregation Left in Shock and Disbelief

Sullivan's wife and children watched in horror as he was marched out of their church at gunpoint, an image that would haunt them and the community. Jeremy Hall, a family friend, recounted the terrifying moment when the kidnappers recognized Sullivan's wife, threw her to the ground, and confirmed their target before abducting the pastor.

Since 2018, Sullivan had been residing in South Africa, having moved from Maryville, Tennessee. His ambition was to build a church for Xhosa-speaking locals, a goal that endeared him to many in the community.

Global Concern Over Pastor Sullivan's Safety

The distressing incident has not only shaken the local community but has also captured international attention. Tonya Morton Rinket, Sullivan's mother, voiced her agony and hope in a public plea: "My heart is breaking, please continue to pray for my son and all of our family."

Adding to the voices of concern, Zach Witt, Sullivan's brother-in-law, urged prayers for Sullivan's safe return, emphasizing the profound impact of the kidnapping on the family.

South African Police and US Authorities Collaborate

South African authorities, including the Police Motherwell Division and the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit, are actively investigating the kidnapping. Police Captain Andrew Beetge revealed that investigators have identified significant leads on suspects, underscoring the urgency and seriousness with which they are handling the case.

The U.S. State Department has also joined the effort, recognizing the severity of the situation involving an American citizen abroad. Their spokesperson confirmed that officials are aware of the case and are actively working to locate Sullivan and ensure his safety.

Community Rallies as Investigation Continues

Meanwhile, the community and Sullivan's family remain hopeful yet anxious for any news of his whereabouts. Jeremy Hall, caring for Sullivan's distraught wife and children, highlighted the lead that authorities are pursuing and expressed his faith in divine help for Sullivan's safe return.

The kidnapping incident has shocked many, revealing the broader issue of rising crime in South Africa, where kidnapping has notably increased. In the last reporting year, authorities recorded over 17,000 such crimes, highlighting the dangers that can lurk in unsuspecting places like a community church.

Hopes Held High for Pastor's Safe Return

The incident at Nelson Mandela Bay's church underscores the unpredictable nature of missionary work in volatile regions. It also casts a spotlight on the bravery and resilience of those like Sullivan, who despite such risks, strive to make a difference in the world.

As investigations proceed, the global community watches, waits, and prays for the safe return of Pastor Josh Sullivan, hoping that this distressing chapter will soon conclude with a reunion and healing for all involved.
