A recent study suggests that consuming over 400 milligrams of caffeine daily may increase the risk of severe heart-related issues.

Excessive caffeine intake is linked to a higher likelihood of cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and strokes, according to Mail Online.

The research, involving 92 healthy individuals, examined how caffeine impacts the cardiovascular system by monitoring their heart rates and blood pressures at rest and after a controlled exercise. Participants also provided details on their daily caffeine consumption and beverage preferences, helping to correlate caffeine intake with changes in cardiovascular health.

The findings showed that consuming over 400 mg of caffeine daily—equivalent to more than four cups of coffee or multiple caffeinated drinks—resulted in significantly higher blood pressure and heart rate. "Due to its effect on the autonomic nervous system, regular caffeine consumption could put otherwise healthy individuals at risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular events," explained Dr. Nency Kagathara.

This increase in heart rate and blood pressure may lead to long-term damage, potentially resulting in heart attacks or strokes. While about 20% of participants exceeded the 400 mg caffeine threshold daily, effects varied based on individual factors like age, activity levels, and diet.

The research presented at the American College of Cardiology Asia's 2024 conference has not yet undergone peer review, an essential step for validating the findings.

Despite needing further validation, the research highlights important implications. As Dr. Kagathara noted, "Increasing awareness of these risks is vital to improve heart health for all." Chronic high blood pressure can lead to long-term cardiovascular issues, including a higher risk of strokes.

The study also examines how caffeine blocks brain receptors related to sleep and attention, increasing brain awareness and oxygen flow while significantly boosting heart rate and blood pressure.

Though the findings raise concerns about high caffeine intake, historical data supports the benefits of moderate consumption, such as improved gut health and lower risks of some heart conditions.
