Lamar Odom Describes Unintentional Drug Use In 2015 Overdose Incident

Lamar Odom, the former NBA star, recently shocked the public by revealing new details about his 2015 near-death experience.

In a candid interview, Odom openly described the unexpected events that led to his overdose. Furthermore, he emphasized his ongoing commitment to advocating against addiction, People reported.

During his appearance on The Kyle & Jackie O Show on January 20, Odom, now 45, vividly recounted the circumstances that ultimately led to his 2015 hospitalization. Notably, personal and professional upheavals, including his highly publicized divorce from reality TV star Khloé Kardashian, drastically altered his life.

Odom has openly battled addiction for years. On the day of his overdose, he went to a Nevada brothel seeking an escape from the emotional pain of his recent divorce. However, while intending to use drugs and find solace in anonymity, he instead encountered near-fatal consequences.

Affected by Addiction and Overwhelmed by Events

"I remember being upset that I didn't have any cocaine to take to the brothel," Odom shared during the interview, reflecting on his state of mind at the time. Upon arriving, he used his credit card, intending to keep the visit private, and consumed alcohol to cope with his distress.

However, Odom's situation deteriorated rapidly after his drink, leading to his awakening in a hospital three days later. He was stunned to find out he had drugs in his system, despite not having consumed any intentionally. "I don't know what they were able to slip into my drink or what," he admitted, marking a critical point in his narrative of the incident.

Odom awoke unable to walk or talk, and this marked the beginning of his grueling recovery process. The media widely covered his hospitalization, which further complicated his situation. As he slowly regained awareness, he realized just how close he had come to losing his life.

Surviving Against Overwhelming Odds

The medical team treating Odom branded him a "walking miracle" due to the severity of his condition when he arrived at the hospital. During his four-day coma, he suffered 12 strokes and six heart attacks, while Kardashian stayed by his bedside throughout the ordeal.

The challenges Odom faced in recovery were monumental, affecting his physical abilities and mental health. "So it took some months of rehabilitation and a lot of prayers, a lot of determination," he explained. His rehabilitation involved relearning to walk and speak, a journey fraught with frustration and despair.

Odom's ordeal has had a profound impact on his life view and mission. Today, he speaks openly about his experiences with addiction, hoping to educate and help others who face similar battles. "Now my mission is probably to help people who have the same problem who couldn't help themselves be able to understand addiction and understand that it's a brain disease," he stated.

Lamar Odom: From Near-Fatal Overdose to Advocate for Recovery

Reflecting on his life after overcoming such overwhelming odds, Odom finds a new appreciation for every day he lives. "Every day, I’m alive. It’s much better than the alternative," he mused, recognizing the second chance he has been given.

His story showcases both survival and transformation. Odom uses his public platform to inspire individuals grappling with addiction and to support them on their recovery journeys. His own experiences and the lessons he has learned about addiction guide his advocacy work.

"You have nothing to do after you beat your death," Odom noted, acknowledging that his near-death experience provided a unique opportunity for personal growth and a renewed focus on what truly matters.

This new chapter in his life is dedicated to aiding others and spreading awareness about the complexities of addiction, making every effort to turn his harrowing experience into a beacon of hope for others.
