In a notable development, a Dominican judge has dismissed all charges against Josh Riibe, an American implicated in the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki in Punta Cana.
According to the Daily Mail, American citizen Josh Riibe has been cleared of suspicion by Dominican authorities following the unresolved disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki at a resort.
On March 6, early morning, Sudiksha Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student, vanished from the Riu Republica Resort where she had been vacationing. The mysterious circumstances of her disappearance have drawn widespread attention, mostly due to the last known interactions she had with fellow vacationer, 22-year-old Josh Riibe.
Riibe and Konanki, along with a group of friends, were recorded by surveillance cameras at the resort, heading towards the beach around 4:15 AM. According to Riibe's account, a sudden large wave hit them while swimming, after which he lost sight of Konanki, last seen waist-deep in water.
Returning alone and conspicuously without his shirt, Riibe appeared back at his resort room at 8:54 AM. The subsequent disappearance of Konanki initiated a series of investigations where Riibe became a central figure.
In response to the growing pressure, Riibe's attorneys filed a habeas corpus writ on March 18, demanding his release unless prosecutors formally charged him. Konanki’s devastated parents petitioned for the court to declare their daughter legally dead, suggesting drowning as the probable cause, just as this legal action emerged.
Judge Edwin Rijo of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance of La Altagracia handled the sensitive case, reviewing surveillance footage and investigative reports. After examining the evidence, he concluded that it did not justify continued suspicions against Riibe, leading him to dismiss the case on an unspecified Friday.
This judicial decision allowed Riibe, who had been restricted from leaving the Dominican Republic, to return to the United States on March 22. Authorities had previously curtailed his movements by confiscating his passport and cell phone.
The closure of the case has not provided complete comfort to Konanki's family, though they have accepted the likelihood of her having drowned. "Both sides of the authorities have shown us how high the ocean waves were at the time of the incident, and both sides have clarified the person of interest was not a suspect from the beginning," stated Subbarayudu Konanki, Sudiksha's father.
He continued, expressing profound sorrow, "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we are coming to terms with the fact that our daughter has drowned. This is incredibly difficult for us to process." The formal declaration of death, he implies, remains a painful acknowledgment of their loss.
Meanwhile, Riibe recounted in court his efforts to save Konanki, exhaustedly collapsing on a sun bed after dragging her from the water. Reflecting on the interrogation following the incident, he frequently withheld detailed responses, advising, "My lawyers advise me not to answer that question and I follow their advice."
Josh Riibe's return to the United States was significant not only for his legal vindication but also for meeting with Konanki’s mother, who, he claims, expressed her gratitude for his attempts to save her daughter before her disappearance became an enigma. "He managed to get out and passed out on a sun bed," Riibe described his exhausted state at the time.
