A 17-year-old Liz Hatton, whose passion for photography captured the hearts of many, including the Princess of Wales, died after battling a rare cancer.
According to the Mirror, Liz's death comes less than a year after being diagnosed with a desmoplastic small round cell tumor, a terminal illness.
Determined to make the most of her time, Liz embarked on fulfilling a personalized bucket list centered around her passion for photography. After doctors diagnosed her with a rare cancer, they estimated she had between six months to three years to live, depending on the success of chemotherapy treatments. Liz's journey and fierce determination captured widespread attention, transforming her into a source of inspiration for many.
Earlier in her journey, Liz achieved a significant milestone when she gained permission to photograph behind the scenes at an investiture at Windsor Castle. This rare opportunity led to an unexpected invitation from the Princess of Wales herself, Kate Middleton, to join her for tea. Liz attended the event with her mother, stepfather Aaron, and brother Mateo.
Despite her illness, Liz held a photography exhibition in London, showcasing the breadth of her talent. Her work spanned various genres and events, including the premiere of "Venom: The Last Dance" and the Royal Variety Show. The exhibition culminated her efforts and poignantly displayed her commitment to her craft.
Liz's bucket list didn’t just limit her to candid photography; it also led her to photograph notable public figures and scenes. She captured images of comedian Michael McIntyre, circus performers, and Royal Ballet dancers, fulfilling more of her photography dreams. Her collaborations extended to high-profile shoots, including one led by esteemed British photographer Rankin and another with models from Storm Model Agency.
Liz’s talent also took her across artistic borders when she spent two days working with LA-based portrait photographer David Suh, who recognized her potential and flew to the UK to collaborate. These sessions provided Liz with invaluable experience and insights into the world of professional photography.
Throughout her challenging journey, Liz received heartening support from the community and figures of public interest. Prince William and Kate Middleton were particularly moved by her creativity and resilience, expressing in a personal message that Liz was a "talented young photographer whose creativity and strength inspired us both."
Liz’s impact extended beyond her photographic work. In response to the lack of a dedicated charity for her type of cancer in the UK, her family, led by her mother Vicky Robayna, initiated a fundraising campaign to support research into desmoplastic small round cell tumors. This initiative aims to lead efforts to find better treatments and eventual cures for this rare cancer.
The campaign gained additional meaning following Liz’s death, marked poignantly by her mother's statement. Vicky Robayna shared, “Our lovely Liz died in the early hours of this morning. She remained determined to her last. Even yesterday, she told me that I had better get nurses sorted so she could do more things. She went out in a blaze of glory with almost everyone she cared about seeing her for the last time at her exhibition last week.”
Renowned photographer Rankin, who worked closely with Liz, commented on her sophisticated approach to creating images. “The photos Liz has created… are sophisticated images… She understands that it’s a creation... It’s been a real privilege, actually, watching her. I’ve been pretty redundant. She did exactly what an experienced photographer would do. She got involved, gave people directions, and almost became the captain of the ship,” he said, underscoring her natural talent and leadership during shoots. Moreover, his words highlighted Liz's ability to lead with confidence, despite her young age and limited experience.
Liz Hatton’s mother expressed gratitude towards the community's support in an emotional tribute, saying, “You ensured Liz’s last two months were her very best. She flew high until the end.” In addition, through her breathtaking images and undying courage, Liz Hatton not only left an indelible mark on the world of photography but also served as a beacon of strength and inspiration to many facing their battles, echoing far beyond the glitz of celebrity and royal connections.
