I survived a lightning strike — insights on life after death

It was an ordinary day in 1975 when Dannion Brinkley's life took a turn towards the extraordinary as he was struck by lightning.

Dannion Brinkley's multiple brushes with death have transformed his understanding of life and its finality, using his experiences to help others face their end, the New York Post reported.

With odds less than one in a million, Brinkley was struck by a lightning bolt that entered his head and traveled down his spine, causing immediate severe effects. The force of the strike threw him into the air, setting him on fire and leaving him temporarily paralyzed. Brinkley vividly recalled the harrowing moment, stating, "It threw me up in the air, I see the ceiling, it slams me back down, a ball of fire comes through the room and blinds me."

The near-fatal encounter didn’t conclude with immediate physical injuries; doctors declared Brinkley dead, and he astonishingly woke up 30 minutes later in a hospital morgue. His revival marked the beginning of a long and challenging recovery process.

Life After Death: A Veteran's Revelation

As he regained his sensibilities post-incident, Brinkley described a profound spiritual experience during which he felt his soul leave his body, saw a blinding light, and his life flashed before his eyes, aligning with phenomena reported in other near-death experiences (NDEs). Experts like Dr. Sam Parnia from NYU Langone Health believe that these episodes, often studied but little understood, have a neurobiological basis.

It took two grueling years for Brinkley to relearn walking, a journey fraught with both physical and spiritual metamorphosis. This period was pivotal in reshaping his outlook on life and death, affirming his belief that consciousness persists beyond physical demise.

"So, when you learn you don’t die... that’s enough to inspire you to change," he shared. More than a decade later, another near-death experience during open heart surgery reinforced his connections with the spiritual realm, meeting angelic beings and gaining insights which he felt compelled to share with others.

A New Purpose through Sharing and Caring

Brinkley authored a book titled "Saved by the Light," in which he documented his extraordinary experiences and the lessons he drew from them. This book, coupled with his talks, aims to convey a message of hope and reassurance about the afterlife.

This message is particularly resonant in his work counseling terminally ill patients and veterans. Brinkley encourages them by sharing his testament and insights, helping alleviate their fears surrounding death. His engagement in these activities is driven by a desire to use his spiritual gifts for the betterment of others’ lives.

Scientific perspectives on NDEs, like those presented by Dr. Parnia, support the uniqueness of these experiences, indicating they are "different from dreams, illusions and delusions," with evidence of sustained brain activity after clinical death. These findings provide a scientific backdrop to Brinkley’s spiritual assertions and experiences.

Challenging Conventional Views on Death

Brinkley's profound experiences have led him to a controversial conclusion about death and existence. "Nobody dies. It never happens. It’s not a part of the nature of reality," he stated, echoing a belief that challenges traditional notions of life and death.

His encounters have not only reshaped his life but have also given him a mission to educate others about the transitions of life and the enduring nature of the human spirit. Through his talks and personal interactions, Brinkley seeks to instill a perspective that death is merely a transformation, not an end.

Despite the skeptics, Brinkley's experiences and his relentless advocacy for a deeper understanding of death and the afterlife continue to resonate with many who hear his story, offering comfort and a new way to perceive our ultimate journey.
