A devastating propane gas explosion tore through a Sinclair, Maine home at 7 pm on August 10, injuring the homeowner and severely damaging neighboring properties.
The explosion was triggered by a lit propane tank, underscoring the hazards associated with household gas usage, Mail Online reported.
The incident occurred in a residential area on Shore Road in Sinclair. The propane tank, when ignited, created a massive blast, projecting debris up to 300 feet into the air. Some of the debris even landed in a nearby lake, drawing attention to the extensive scope of the explosion.
Neighbor Barabra Deschaine's property also suffered from the explosion. Debris damaged her garage, and the force of the explosion blew out windows in several homes. Another nearby residence caught fire, further complicating the emergency response.
"I heard a boom and I felt like the floor was going to cave into the cellar and the roof was going to fall in on top of me," Deschaine recounted. She described a chaotic scene with debris flying everywhere, highlighting the terrifying nature of the event.
Fortunately, numerous fire departments responded quickly to the scene. "We’re fortunate that so many fire departments came to help because it could have been a lot worse," said Deschaine, expressing relief at the swift emergency response that potentially averted further disaster.
In light of the explosion, experts have emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of propane leaks. North Lakes Deputy Fire Chief Derrick Ouellette outlined the subtle yet critical indicators that could suggest a gas leak.
"When leaks occur they can be silent or there may be a hissing sound. The smell of rotten eggs or skunk spray may also fill the area but it can go unnoticed as it typically lingers closer to the ground," explained Ouellette. He stressed that an unexpected rise in meter readings could be a sign of a gas leak if there hasn't been an increase in gas usage.
Ouellette also provided additional advice on detecting gas leaks. "If your consumption has gone up and you haven’t used any more than usual, there’s a sign right there," he stated, urging homeowners to be vigilant about checking their gas meter readings for any unusual increments.
In response to the explosion and the risks identified, Con Edison issued specific safety recommendations for homeowners. These include ensuring that stove burners are fully turned off, verifying connections to gas appliances, and keeping any flammable materials away from heat sources.
Furthermore, in case of suspected gas leaks, Con Edison strongly advises residents to leave the area immediately and contact emergency services. "If anyone suspects a gas leak, they should call 911 or their gas company and 'leave the area immediately.' They should also avoid lighting matches, starting cars, or using electronic appliances as they could spark a fire," detailed the safety notice.
This incident follows a similar tragedy in Goodhope, Missouri, where a propane leak caused an explosion, killing four family members. Both events underscore the urgent need for greater awareness and stricter safety measures for household gas systems, highlighting the dangers of ignoring gas leak signs.
