Escaped kangaroo leads chase through Florida town, owner faces charges

In a surprising turn of events, a young kangaroo named Hickory caused a spectacle by hopping down a bustling road in Saint Cloud, Florida.

A recent kangaroo escape in Saint Cloud, Florida, ended safely, though it led to charges against the kangaroo's owner for lacking proper permits, Fox News reported.

Hickory, who is just a little over a year old, made an unforeseen getaway from his owner's property on Monday. The sight of a kangaroo jumping freely caused both amusement and concern among the residents and motorists of Osceola County.

Resident Kaila Mullins captured the marsupial's escapade on her smartphone. She documented Hickory hopping along the road for roughly two minutes, after which he leapt over a fence and vanished into nearby fields. This video quickly gained attention on social media.

The unexpected sight prompted several calls to the authorities from concerned bystanders. These calls set into motion a response from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), which dispatched a team including a captive wildlife investigator.

Rescue Operation Ensues to Secure Escapee Kangaroo

The search for Hickory didn't last long; rescuers found him within an hour, hidden in a wooded area not far from where they last saw him. The rescue team included a diverse group: a licensed kangaroo facility owner, volunteers, veterinary staff, and state wildlife officials.

To ensure the safety of both Hickory and the public, given the proximity of heavy traffic, the team decided to tranquilize him. They then transported Hickory to the Amazing Animals Wildlife Preserve to ensure his well-being while legal proceedings and safety assessments for his enclosure took place.

The kangaroo will remain at the preserve until further notice. The preserve's staff is taking every precaution to ensure Hickory's health and safety, especially given kangaroos' vulnerability to stress and potential heart problems under duress.

Legal Issues Surface for Kangaroo Owner

The revelation that the owner, a 27-year-old resident, did not possess the necessary permits to house a kangaroo has led to legal charges. The authorities have stressed the importance of meeting the state's wildlife housing standards to prevent such incidents.

"We were very careful," explained a staff member from the wildlife preserve, "We are just holding Hickory for the state, and we are hoping that he can be returned to his owner once everything is in order." This sentiment reveals an intention to reunite Hickory with his owner, pending legal and safety compliance.

Meanwhile, staff from the preserve communicated to FOX 35 the sensitive nature of kangaroos' health, highlighting the risks involved when these animals are subjected to unexpected exertion or stress.

Community Reacts to Kangaroo Capture

The community has reacted to Hickory's adventure with mixed emotions. Many have expressed sympathy for the young kangaroo, while others have pointed out the importance of complying with wildlife regulations. This event has sparked conversations about wildlife safety and responsible animal ownership in the area.

Authorities are using this incident to emphasize the importance of securing proper permits and maintaining secure enclosures for exotic pets. They hope this situation serves as a learning opportunity for current and future exotic pet owners to ensure their pets' safety and compliance with local laws.

As for Hickory, he remains in the care of the Amazing Animals Wildlife Preserve, receiving the necessary care while his future hangs in the balance, dependent on legal and regulatory resolutions concerning his living conditions and the compliance of his owner.
