Elderly Woman Dies, Scores Ill From Eel At Yokohama Department Store

A tragic food poisoning outbreak linked to grilled eel has resulted in one fatality and numerous illnesses at a Yokohama department store.

Nearly 150 patrons of the Keikyu Department Store suffered health complications after consuming the contaminated dish, leading to an ongoing health investigation, AP News reported.

The series of unfortunate events unfolded after customers purchased grilled eel from the Keikyu Department Store's restaurant, Nihonbashi Isesada, between July 24 and July 25. This Tokyo-based restaurant is well-known for its traditional Japanese cuisine.

Shortly after eating the eel, customers began to report severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms were indicative of a foodborne illness, prompting immediate health inspections.

An older woman in her 90s was among those affected. Sadly, she passed away following severe symptoms related to the incident. Her death is currently under investigation to confirm the exact cause.

Immediate Health Response Activated

Health authorities were quick to respond, collecting and testing excrement samples from affected individuals. The analysis confirmed the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, a common cause of food poisoning.

This bacterium, which can produce toxins leading to illness when ingested, was pinpointed as the culprit behind the outbreak. It raised concerns about food handling and preparation standards at the facility.

In response to the outbreak, two more people were hospitalized due to severe symptoms, emphasizing the gravity of the health hazard posed by the contaminated eel.

Department Store and Restaurant Chain React

In light of the incident, both Keikyu Department Store and Nihonbashi Isesada issued public apologies. They have expressed their commitment to cooperating fully with health officials to ascertain the source of contamination and prevent future occurrences.

Operations at all Isesada locations within the department store have been temporarily suspended. This measure allows for a thorough investigation and remedial actions to ensure safety compliance and restore public confidence.

Soichiro Tomita, an executive at Isesada, disclosed during a press briefing that some cooks needed to adhere to the mandatory use of plastic gloves while preparing food. This lapse might have contributed to the spread of bacteria.

The incident triggered a thorough review of food safety protocols at Nihonbashi Isesada and Keikyu Department Store. Health inspectors are examining hygiene practices and employee adherence to food safety guidelines.

With over 1,700 servings of grilled eel sold during the period, the potential exposure was significant, heightening the urgency of the response.

Authorities and businesses are working to identify lapses in food handling to prevent a recurrence of the contamination.
