A single bag of Cheetos discarded in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico has triggered an unintended ecological experiment.
An entire ecosystem of cave-dwelling creatures thrived temporarily from just one forgotten snack, Scripps News reported.
In the spacious Big Room area of Carlsbad Caverns, a full bag of popular snacks was left behind, creating an unexpected food source for local wildlife. This fragment of human presence instigated a complex interplay of biological activities underground.
The cave’s constant humidity and unique environmental conditions aided the growth of microbes and fungi on the processed snack. These organisms, breaking down the food, set the stage for a larger ecological occurrence.
A food web swiftly emerged, comprising various cave residents such as crickets, mites, spiders, and flies. This web spun its delicate strands through the consumption and redistribution of the snack's nutrients.
The national park explained how these small creatures organized into an efficient ecosystem. “Cave crickets, mites, spiders, and flies soon organize into a temporary food web, dispersing the nutrients to the surrounding cave and formations," the park detailed in a public statement.
Mold growth was another immediate consequence of the snack’s presence. Fungi colonized higher up the nearby cave surfaces, eventually fruiting and producing a noticeable odor that permeated the cave atmosphere.

Park rangers had to undertake a meticulous cleanup operation lasting at least 20 minutes. This involved scrubbing the cave surfaces to remove the invasive molds and any residues from the food item.
