Accidental burglar calls police on himself after a car theft gone awry

In a bizarre turn of events, a would-be car thief ended up calling the police on himself after believing he was trapped inside a Dodge dealership in Tyler, Texas.

During the break-in, Jeremiah Megallon, 38, injured himself and mistakenly thought he was locked inside, leading to his arrest, the New York Post reported.

On Wednesday night, in an ill-fated attempt to steal a car, Megallon threw a rock through the window of the Patterson Dodge dealership. His plan went awry almost immediately when he sustained injuries from the broken glass. Megallon made his way into the building through the shattered window, setting the stage for a series of misjudgments.

Inside, Megallon quickly realized he was bleeding and started to panic. Thinking he was unable to exit through the same window without further injury and unknowingly overlooking several unlocked doors, he made the desperate decision to call 911 for assistance.

A Thief's Miscalculation and Accidental Call for Help

The police, responding to Megallon's call, arrived at the scene to find a situation less dangerous than a typical burglary. He was treated at a nearby hospital for his cuts before being taken into custody. Charged with burglary of a building, Megallon's night of attempted crime ended significantly different from how it began.

Reflecting on the incident, Public Information Officer Andy Erbaugh provided insight into the unusual situation. "He said he had broken into the Patterson Dodge dealership in an attempt to steal a car but was unable to get out of the building," Erbaugh recounted the intruder's admission.

Erbaugh added a note on how easily Megallon could have avoided his predicament: "Unfortunately for him, there were several unlocked doors he could have used to get out. After 26 years here, truth is stranger than fiction." These remarks underscore the unnecessary nature of the call Megallon made that night.

The Limited Loot of a Misguided Burglar

Aside from his failed attempt to steal a vehicle, the only item Megallon managed to pilfer was candy from a salesperson's desk. This small theft added a somewhat comical element to an otherwise straightforward burglary case.

The dealership suffered minimal damage from the incident, with only the broken window needing replacement. This prevented a major financial impact on the business, reducing the potential severity of Megallon's actions.

While the event concluded with an arrest and some medical care for the perpetrator, it also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of crime and the unexpected ways in which culprits might find themselves caught. Thanks to Megallon's misjudgment and subsequent phone call, the police apprehended him with less difficulty than they would typically encounter in a burglary response.

Lessons Learned from an Unusual Crime Scenario

In the aftermath, both the law enforcement community and the public reflect on the peculiarities of this case. It not only shows the immediate consequences of criminal actions but also highlights the importance of situational awareness, both for criminals and for the general public.

Megallon now faces legal consequences and serves as a cautionary tale about the risks and unpredictabilities of committing crimes. His erroneous belief and subsequent arrest underscore the fact that not all plans are foolproof and that sometimes criminals inadvertently lead to their capture.

As this odd tale unfolded, the residents of Tyler and beyond received an unusual story of crime and accidental self-apprehension, combining elements of misfortune and justice in one strange evening at Patterson Dodge.
