Gene Hackman, wife found dead, no foul play suspected

The mysterious deaths of acclaimed actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and one of their dogs in their Santa Fe home have puzzled authorities.

According to USA Today, Investigations have ruled out carbon monoxide or gas leaks as contributing factors, with no evidence of foul play detected so far.

On February 26, 2025, the couple and their dog were discovered deceased, launching an immediate investigation by local police. The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office quickly initiated tests to determine the presence of harmful gases.

Further scrutiny came from the New Mexico Gas Company, which conducted an exhaustive inspection the same evening. While they identified minor issues, none were deemed relevant to the deaths.

Initial Tests Dispel Carbon Monoxide Concerns

The company reported a negligible gas concentration from a stove burner and several code violations at Hackman's residence. According to a press release, "There were no significant findings...one red tag was for a minuscule leak at one of the stove burners."

Additionally, "The other four red tags were for code enforcement violations -not involving gas leaks or carbon monoxide.” This detail was pertinent in confirming that none of these factors played a role in the unfortunate event.

This conclusion was supported by the sheriff's office, which noted, "These results 'are not believed to be a factor in the deaths.'"

Details from the Scene Offer More Clues

A search warrant affidavit revealed disturbing scenes at the home. Hackman was located near his cane in the mudroom, suggesting he might have fallen; Arakawa was found in a bathroom, with prescription pills scattered nearby.

The state of the bodies suggested that they had been deceased for a significant amount of time before discovery. A deputy noted signs of decomposition on Arakawa, including bloating and mummification.

While one of their dogs was found deceased in a closet close to Arakawa, two others were alive, discovered in or near the bathroom. This highlighted the isolated nature of the tragic event.

No Foul Play Suspected by Authorities

Despite the grim scene, the deaths have been classified as suspicious yet no foul play is currently suspected by the authorities. This assessment rests on the timeline established by Hackman's pacemaker.

It recorded Hackman’s last heartbeat on February 17, 2025, likely indicating the day he passed away. "It was 'a very good assumption' to conclude that was Hackman's 'last day of life,' more than a week before he was found," a sheriff's office representative stated during a press conference.

The evidence collected from the investigation was sent to the Office of the Medical Investigator for further analysis, in hopes of uncovering more about the mysterious circumstances surrounding these deaths.
