An infant's death and multiple illnesses have forced Yu Shang Food, Inc. to recall over 72,000 pounds of ready-to-eat meats and poultry products nationwide, New York Post reported.

The unfortunate sequence began in late October when routine listeria testing first flagged the presence of the bacteria in food products. This initial finding focused primarily on goods such as chicken feet, duck neck, beef shank, and pork hock, which later led to hospitalizations and severe illness. According to information released by health officials, these ready-to-eat items were distributed across several states and available for purchase online.

Yu Shang Food Initial Recall and Expanded Measures

In early November, Yu Shang Food, Inc. initially recalled about 4,600 pounds of these products. However, as more cases of listeria-related illnesses were confirmed, the company expanded its recall on November 9 to include over 72,000 pounds. The company escalated its response due to the severity and spread of the outbreak, which affected individuals in at least four states, including New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and predominantly California.

The identified victims of this outbreak shared a commonality in their Asian heritage. The CDC reported that among the affected, girls and the elderly were particularly vulnerable due to their higher risk of severe illness from listeria.

Tragic Outcomes Amid Rising Health Concerns

The most heart-wrenching case related to this outbreak involved a mother and her twin infants. The CDC confirmed that listeria had infected the mother and one of the twins, directly linking their conditions to the contaminated food. Unfortunately, one of the twins succumbed to the illness, prompting a rigorous investigation into the food's origin and distribution line. The other twin, though not testing positive for listeria, also passed away under different circumstances.

This case highlighted the dangers of listeria contamination and spurred nationwide concern. All affected individuals exhibited symptoms typical of listeria infection, ranging from fever and muscle aches to more severe reactions like headaches and loss of balance.
