Tourists Follow GPS Into Marina, Bartender Saves The Day

In a dramatic turn of events in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, a couple narrowly escaped a dangerous situation thanks to the quick actions of a local bartender.

A vehicle sank into a marina after its occupants, guided by their GPS, mistakenly drove down a boat ramp; their rescue was orchestrated by quick-thinking staff from a nearby restaurant, the New York Post reported.

On a seemingly ordinary Saturday night, a couple in their 60s found themselves in peril after a casual dinner at 71 Seafood restaurant. They followed their vehicle's GPS instructions, which unfortunately led them directly to a boat ramp and subsequently into the marina's waters.

A Night at the Marina Turns Perilous

The SUV submerged rapidly in the water, prompting the couple to roll down the windows hastily. The situation could have quickly turned dire if not for the immediate response of nearby witnesses and employees from the restaurant they had just left.

Johnny Himmelsbach, a bartender at 71 Seafood and former lifeguard, did not hesitate upon seeing the dangerous predicament. Witnesses and colleagues praised his quick dive into the water to aid the distressed couple.

Heroic Bartender Leads Remarkable Rescue

Christopher Sollom, a diner at the restaurant, emphasized the critical timing of the rescue. "It could have gone a different way. Everything aligned for a perfect rescue," he remarked. Sollom detailed how Himmelsbach immediately jumped into the water and managed to pull the couple from their sinking vehicle before it completely submerged.

Additional support came in the form of Cash Luther, another employee, who assisted in the rescue efforts, while Shannon Standhardt swiftly dialed 911 to alert emergency services of the unfolding drama.

Community and Police Acknowledge Bravery

"He’s truly an angel. His heroic actions helped these innocent travelers...I can’t say we will ever forget this evening," Shannon Standhardt stated, highlighting the emotional impact of the incident on all witnesses.

In addition, Sgt. Matt Storen from the local police mentioned how the event could have easily had a tragic conclusion. He praised the bravery and quick action of the restaurant workers, stating, "At the end of the day, two people can go home to their families because…[workers] risked their lives to save others."

Aftermath and Safety Measures Taken

Following the incident, authorities immediately closed the boat ramp to prevent further accidents and reopened it only after thorough checks the next day. Meanwhile, a professional diving team retrieved the submerged SUV from the marina.

Emergency responders thoroughly examined the couple involved in the accident, and they ultimately passed a DUI field test, confirming that alcohol was not a factor in the mishap. Although they declined further medical treatment, they reportedly felt shaken by the event and expressed gratitude for the swift action of their rescuers.

Community Reflects on a Near Tragedy Averted

This incident has sparked conversations among the Isle of Palms community and its visitors about the reliability of GPS navigation in waterfront areas. In response, local authorities are reviewing safety measures to ensure that similar accidents are prevented in the future.

Meanwhile, the couple, having returned home safely, expressed immense gratitude towards Himmelsbach and all the individuals who intervened during their time of need. Ultimately, their ordeal serves as a poignant reminder of the unexpected challenges that can arise when technology and real-world conditions intersect imperfectly.
