Jenny Phenix had envisioned a new chapter in her life filled with adventures across the seas on board the Villa Vie Odyssey. Her anticipation led her to dissolve all of her possessions and even her businesses, setting her sights on a fresh start filled with exotic locales and uninterrupted tranquility. A resident of Florida, Phenix was ready to embark on this floating home for the next three years.
Phenix's journey began with setbacks even before setting sail. Slated to board the ship in Southampton on May 15, she faced multiple delays. The authorities pushed the new embarkation date back to May 30 in Belfast, causing significant inconvenience and a growing sense of frustration among the guests, notably Phenix. The delays resulted partially from the Villa Vie Odyssey's lapsed certifications, which officials had not renewed following four years of inactivity because of the pandemic.
While waiting, Phenix, like many others, moved into temporary housing to stay close to the launch site. During this period, the cruise’s itinerary was modified, and she was assigned a temporary cabin as her promised permanent cabin was still occupied by the crew. It was these conditions that led Phenix to voice her concerns in a private WhatsApp group dedicated to passengers of the cruise.
Her venting, meant to be in private among fellow passengers, was somehow leaked and reached the ears of the cruise management. According to reports, other passengers had also noted their distress over the repeated changes and mismanagements, expressing gratitude to Phenix for voicing the group’s concerns. Yet, none anticipated the repercussions this would bring.
Kathy Villalba, the ship’s chief operating officer, delivered a decisive blow to Phenix's plans. Villalba cited "over a dozen formal complaints" about Phenix’s "continuous complaints and negativity." She pointed out that such behavior was detrimental to the morale and overall well-being of other passengers, which led to the decision to cancel Phenix’s reservation onboard the Villa Vie Odyssey.
Caught unaware of this decision, Phenix felt devastated. In her own words, she shared the profound emotional and physical toll the experience inflicted on her, emphasizing that others misconstrued her intentions and unfairly shattered her dreams. Phenix explained that she did not mean to disrupt but to address the collective concerns of many passengers who were silently suffering.
This incident wasn't Phenix’s first encounter with cruise-related disappointments. Previously, she had planned a similar voyage with another company, Life At Sea, which unfortunately went bankrupt before the journey could begin, further compounding her grievances with cruise travel.
As the debacle unfolded, Phenix found herself in a precarious position. Forced to reconsider her entire future, she remarked on returning to Florida disappointed and dejected. She is currently staying with her daughter while contemplating her next steps.
Phenix’s story concludes with a partial refund of her sizeable $300,000 deposit from the cruise company, with promises of more to come as compensation for the distress and inconvenience caused. Meanwhile, Mikael Petterson, the CEO of Villa Vie Residences, stood firm on the decision, stating that Phenix had "broken multiple terms and conditions," including a non-disclosure agreement. This indicates a tense and unresolved conflict between what Villa Vie promised and what Phenix delivered.
