Delta Flight Returns To Salt Lake City After Severe Pressurization Problems Above 10K Feet

A Delta Airlines journey from Salt Lake City to Portland took a grave turn when passengers suffered from ruptured eardrums and bloody noses due to a malfunction in the aircraft’s pressurization system at 10,000 feet.The incident, resulting in a return to Salt Lake City and an FAA investigation, highlights severe pressurization failings on board Delta Flight 1203, New York Post reported.

On September 15, Delta Airlines flight 1203, carrying 140 passengers, experienced critical pressurization issues shortly after ascending past 10,000 feet. This malfunction led to physical injuries among the passengers, necessitating a course reversal back to Salt Lake International Airport.

The failure in the aircraft’s pressurization system was evident as passengers began to experience discomfort, which escalated to more severe symptoms. According to passenger accounts, the situation aboard became alarming.

Jaci Purser, one of the affected passengers, recounted a terrifying moment, “I grabbed my ear, and then I pulled my hand back, and there was blood on it.” This incident paints a vivid picture of the acute distress faced by those on board.

Prompt Response To Medical Emergencies

The lack of oxygen mask deployment despite the pressurization failure added to the urgency of the situation. Caryn Allen, another passenger, described witnessing her husband’s acute reaction to the pain, as well as another individual’s severe bloody nose, further highlighting the chaotic scene. “I looked over at my husband, and he had both of his hands over his ears, kind of leaning forward,” Allen detailed. She added, “I looked about a row behind me, over on the other side of the aisle, and there was a gentleman that had a very bad bloody nose, and people were trying to help him.”

The aircraft’s return to Salt Lake City was swift, focusing on the immediate need for medical attention. Upon landing, at least 10 passengers were promptly attended to by medical personnel, receiving evaluations and treatment for their injuries. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration quickly took notice of the incident, stating that the pressurization problems present during the flight were under investigation.

Professional Handling and Follow-Up

Delta handled the post-incident procedures by issuing apologies from a company spokesperson, who expressed remorse over the unfortunate events. “We sincerely apologize to our customers for their experience on flight 1203 on Sept. 15,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson also explained the immediate actions taken: “The flight crew followed procedures to return to SLC where our teams on the ground supported our customers with their immediate needs.”

Following the ordeal, Delta Airlines accommodated the displaced passengers by booking them on another flight to their intended destination, Portland, thereby ensuring the continuation of their travel plans with minimal further delay.

Technicians with Delta Airlines identified and repaired the pressurization issue, and as a result, they deemed the affected aircraft fit for operation and returned it to service the following day.
