The 59-year-old associate district judge from Garfield County, Oklahoma, has faced severe scrutiny following allegations of having sexual relations with two female court bailiffs and engaging in inappropriate conduct within the courthouse. Lovell's arrest for a road rage shooting in Austin, Texas, has further compounded the attention drawn by these accusations.
From February to October 2011, Lovell had an affair with a bailiff during work hours. Lovell admitted to the relationship but denied having any sexual encounters in the courthouse.
The bailiff later resigned. In mid-2023, Lovell began a second affair with another bailiff, exchanging explicit messages during work hours. Investigators recovered texts that showed Lovell and the bailiff discussed deleting their messages, which Lovell eventually did.
Lovell’s attorneys argue that consenting adults were involved in the affairs and should not face punishment, citing changing cultural views on private conduct.
However, the state contends that Lovell’s dishonesty during the investigation justifies removing him. The court will hold his ouster trial on December 2 at the Oklahoma Judicial Center and will review his removal on September 12.
In September 2023, authorities arrested Lovell for a road rage incident in Austin, Texas, where he fired at eight parked cars. Though no one was injured, this added to his growing legal troubles.
Lovell denied intent and claimed the woman driving had cut him off. Authorities also indicted him for a shooting months earlier at his brother-in-law's ranch, where the gunfire nearly hit his nephew. Since his September arrest, Lovell has not presided over any cases.
Prosecutors assert that exposing these affairs aims to address potential misconduct rather than humiliate Lovell. Furthermore, they stress transparency to uphold the integrity of the justice system.
Meanwhile, the second bailiff reflected on the courthouse table scandal, acknowledged the affair, but downplayed its significance. The bailiff remarked, "But not for that reason."
