An unexpected twist of fate led a Florida couple's antique appraisal into a complex international legal saga involving 18th-century gold bars.
Gay and Philip Courter were arrested for holding gold bars from a shipwreck, leading to emotional and financial turmoil before the charges were dismissed, Mail Online reported.
In 1986, a peculiar encounter led the Courters to unknowingly become custodians of a small trove of gold bars. During a visit to their home in Florida, Gérard Pesty, a Frenchman they met five years earlier, presented them with a briefcase filled with the ingots. The pieces were part of a loot from the Prince de Conty, a French frigate that had met a tragic end in 1746 after crashing into rocks off the coast of Brittany.
At this point, the Courters were unaware of the dark history attached to these riches. The ingots were believed to have been salvaged illegally from the wreck by French divers in the 1970s, initiating a chain of secretive exchanges far from the sea's depths.
Several characters and cloaked negotiations marked the journey of the gold bars before they reached the Courters. Gérard Pesty acquired the ingots through another Frenchman, Yves Gladu, an underwater photographer known for his diving exploits. Gladu had previously sold parts of this hoard in Switzerland and concealed the rest in his attic.
